Andy McNab and Laina Gordon arrived at Harold Cosgrove’s property at half past five in the morning, bringing members of the Adair inquiry with them. It had taken McNab hours to work out the jurisdictional problems of the crime scene; English law was far different from Scottish law. In the end it was agreed that the Grampian CID would process the scene and maintain all evidence found, and that the Durham Constabulary would supervise. Meaning it would be like treading eggshells.
McNab brought a small army of police vehicles, the largest, two blue Technical Support Unit vans. Trotter whistled under his breath as the vehicles rolled into the courtyard. He slapped Linley on the back, and the smaller man winced.
“Time we opened the kitchen, little man, and get one of these plods”—Trotter pointed to some of the young constables who’d been assigned from Durham for search purposes—“to make tea all around. It’s going to be a busy morning.”
Mornay winked at his boss as he passed McNab’s car to get to Gordon’s Mercedes. He had an umbrella ready to shield her from the rain, which had lessened during the early-morning hours. Claire held an umbrella for McNab.
“Did you get the inventory list?” Gordon asked.
“About an hour ago. Claire and I have already made one inspection.”
Gordon kept her body neatly under the umbrella without appearing overly concerned with the puddles she walked through with her sensible, thick-soled black loafers. “And?”
“Except for the Nissan and the trailer that was in the Cordiff accident, everything is accounted for. Someone’s been using the Toyota.”
“Does anyone have the legal authority to use any of the vehicles?”
“Not yet.”
“So someone’s been using them and returning them when they’re finished?”
“Just the Toyota and Nissan.”
“Are there any walk-in freezers on the premises?” she asked, as they entered the dark building. A pair of TSU technicians followed; she turned and ordered one of them to get the electric turned on.
“You might want to have a word with Inspector Trotter,” Mornay said over his shoulder to the tech. “He’s in the kitchen.” Through the open door he saw Claire speaking with McNab in the courtyard and turned his attention back to Laina Gordon. The dim lighting suited her angled features; it made her look softer, younger. “There’s a chest freezer in the house that would’ve been large enough to store a small body. However, there’s been no electricity to keep it running.”
“Then have one of the local constables do the rounds, see if any of the neighbors heard a generator running these last two weeks. See if they noticed any vehicles driving down the road toward the property these past several months. Should be easy enough to find out, since we’re at the end of the road.”
